Gilbert Ward Academy Planning Approval

Gilbert Ward Academy Planning Approval

Councillors at Northumberland County Council have approved planning permission for Gilbert Ward Academy,  our new special school in Blyth.

Gilbert Ward Academy will provide education for students aged 11-16 with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) needs.

Due to an increased demand for specialist educational places a bid for an 80-place secondary SEMH school was made by Northumberland County Council in 2018 as part of the Government’s Special Free Schools programme. Gilbert ward Academy will be situated on the Princess Louise site in Blyth an will open in September 2023.

Designs for the new school also include a multi-use games area (MUGA) that will be open to the community.

Chris Richardson, Acting Chief Executive Officer commented "Everybody at Prosper Learning Trust is absolutely delighted that planning permission has been granted for Gilbert Ward Academy.  We can now move on to the next phase of construction which will commence immediately with handover of the new building due in June 2023."
"We will be building a state-of-the-art facility specially designed to meet the needs of children and young people with SEMH and autism and will appoint a Headteacher in the autumn term 2022 to help us plan for the opening in September 2023."
"Prosper Learning Trust already has a proven track record of delivering high quality special education across Newcastle and Sunderland and is looking forward to working with colleagues in Northumberland. We intend to bring our existing expertise and experience to Blyth and ensure that Gilbert Ward Academy provides the highest possible standard of learning and care to the young people we work with. In doing so we also hope to become an important source of support and advice for parents, carers and the wider community in the lifelong challenge of helping young people with special educational needs to flourish and thrive"
